Guys in Hawaiian shirts

We had our annual Father's Day BBQ potluck on the 20th. The potluck committee chair, a man of impeccable grooming with an extensive wardrobe, asked all the men to come in Hawaiian shirts, under the assumption every well-dressed man had one or two. Some men didn't have them. Others had understated ones. An understated Hawaiian shirt is like a health food vending booth at the county fair - nice, but it misses the point. You go to the county fair to eat fat, salt and nitrates, preferably dripping with sauce and served on a bun. You wear a Hawaiian shirt to flout good taste, preferably one with 14 colors, three tropical flowers and a macaw. We did the best we could with what we had. Here's a group photo.

Here's your chance to wear a stovepipe hat! Details on their web site, above or call the help line, (209) 527-0776, or send e-mail:

Jim Sparkman and equipment

Jim Sparkman, Chair of the New Building Committee, poses by a large machine that will spend the week digging the foundation for our new building. Jim and Rev. Grace have spent years shepherding our building permit through the long, arduous process of approval.
